Building Resilience, One Step at a Time

I recently signed up for the Austin Half Marathon, which will be held on February 16th. This will be my third half marathon, and as I get ready to train, I’m reflecting on the journey that brought me here. Running, for me, has always been about more than just the race. It’s a way to build resilience, achieve success, and improve performance—both on and off the course.

A Look Back at the Journey

My first half marathon was in Osaka, Japan, back in 2010. I finished in 2:21:20. That race taught me the power of setting a goal and working steadily toward it. My second half marathon came much later, in 2023, in Dallas. I finished with a time of 2:25:33. Though it was slower, it reminded me of the value of staying consistent and persevering over time.

Between these two races, I ran two full marathons, both in Honolulu in 2021 and 2022. These 26.2-mile challenges pushed me to my limits. They required physical strength, mental determination, and emotional endurance. Each race taught me how to dig deep and find resilience within myself.

A Setback That Became a Turning Point

But life doesn’t always follow a straight path. In early 2023, while preparing for the Washington DC Half Marathon, I started feeling pain in my hip. It wasn’t something I could ignore. I had to pause, rest, and rethink my running goals. That break was longer than I expected, and for a while, I let go of the idea of running full marathons altogether.

Even so, I wasn’t ready to give up running. Later in 2023, I ran the Dallas Half Marathon in December. Crossing that finish line was a huge milestone. It showed me that setbacks don’t have to be the end of the story. They can be the start of something new.

Lessons in Resilience, Success, and Performance

Training for the Austin Half Marathon feels different. It’s not just about proving I can run the distance again. It’s about celebrating recovery, perseverance, and hope. Here’s what running has taught me:

  1. Resilience grows through consistency and recovery. Challenges, whether they’re injuries, personal struggles, or professional obstacles, are part of life. What matters is how we respond. Taking time to rest and rebuild is as important as pushing forward.

  2. Success isn’t always a straight line. There are ups and downs in any journey. Staying flexible and focused on the long-term goal makes all the difference.

  3. Performance improves when we trust the process. Whether in running or in life, progress isn’t just about big milestones. It’s about showing up every day and putting in the effort.

Looking Ahead

As I prepare for the Austin Half Marathon, I’m reminded that every step matters, no matter how small. Signing up for this race is my way of saying, “I’m still here, and I’m still moving forward.” While I’ve put the idea of running another full marathon on hold for now, I’m hopeful that one day I’ll cross that finish line again. For now, I’m grateful for what I can do and for the joy of running.
