My YouTuber Journey
It’s been a month since I made my debut as a YouTuber. I just started it as something new to do for my 45th birthday, and also to continue my son Tyler’s legacy. In the past one month, I’ve made 22 videos (including I’m planning to upload tonight), I have 58 subscribers, 1.3K views.
Even my equipment got better. I started to do it just using my phone, but I was recommended to get a ring right first. Then I was advised that the angle wasn’t good, so I changed the position of the camera. And today, I got a used camera and microphone from my editor, who is my ex-husband.
I’m thankful he’s doing this editing work for almost free. He agrees that this is a great project to continue our son Ty’s legacy, so he’s volunteering to do the editing. Well, actually, initially, we agreed to that he will get one dollar per subscriber. So, after working for one month since my birthday on April 19th, he’ll receive 58 dollars. lol
Out of the 22 videos I’ve uploaded, the most watched video is my very first one, my birthday message to myself. It has 377 views, 6 comments, and 17 likes. This was a very special one for me since it was very first time and I didn’t know what I was doing. I mean, I still haven’t figured out a lot of things about YouTube, but now I have some experience.
The second most watched video is the first part of my two-parts video “Adversity to Advocacy" in which I talked about fighting cancer with Ty. This has 195 views and 8 likes. It is an important piece for me because it’s the first time I recorded this story in my video and shared on public.
The third most watched one is the wedding anniversary video I did with my husband, Sam. Because it was shared on his Facebook too, we have 189 views, comments, and 18 likes. I truly enjoyed shooting the video with my husband, and hear his perspective when he was speaking to the camera. Nice and interesting way to communicate.
The least viewed is about cultural assessment, GlobeSmart. Maybe it’s because this is the latest video uploaded. It has only 7 views and 1 like. I shared my cultural tendency and how my cultural background might have affected the way I work and communicate.
The second least viewed is the one I uploaded on Mother’s Day. 8 views and 2 comments. Important values I learned from her both directly and indirectly, and also the values I unlearned when I was going though my divorce with my first husband.
The third is about marriage communication. 11 views and one like. I talked about what’s important when two people with two different ways of living and communicating live together. I shared some books I read and the real examples of how we are trying to understand each other and communicate better.
Whether it’s the most viewed or the least, each video clip is an important part of me. I’ve been trying to build my muscles of expressing my thoughts and ideas. Voicing itself is a challenge that requires me to be courageous and vulnerable, which I enjoy very much.
So, it’s so easy for me to tend to think about views. “Wow, I got less than 10 views on this video.” “Less and less views as time goes by,” “Maybe people don’t care about what I have to say.” But, I know I’m doing this for myself.
The purpose of my YouTube video is, as I mentioned earlier, to continue my son’s legacy, but also to record what my thoughts and ideas are. That way, in the future, hopefully, I can write a book. I don’t know what it’s going to be about… maybe about me, my work, my marriage, my children, my family, and maybe all of these.
If you watched any of these video’s, and if you feel like supporting our family project, please support us by subscribing! My YouTuber journey continues!
